Individual donors are our most stable and effective source of support. As a community organization, we strive to build a diverse base of donors. The Boston Adult Literacy Fund's broadening circle of supporters is a living endowment for adults who need basic education.
Phillis Wheatley's experience reveals how literacy changes lives. Born in Africa in 1753, she was kidnapped and sold as a slave to a Boston family. Given the rare opportunity to learn, she quickly became fluent in English, Latin, and Greek. She went on to publish a book of poetry in 1773, becoming only the second woman in America to accomplish this feat. Phillis Wheatley gained her freedom in 1778, epitomizing Frederick Douglass' belief that, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." Her life struggles and accomplishments exemplify not only the power of literacy but also the drive and determination of literacy students today.
If you wish to honor someone with a gift to the Boston Adult Literacy Fund, simply send us their address and we will send them our Boston Adult Literacy Fund card acknowledging your gift.
